change or transformation in Japanese
Henkaa means "change" and everything we do revolves around that one concept.
Your style changes, your waistline changes, your life changes.
But if everything is always changing, shouldn't your fashion change with you?
We were wondering the same thing, so we made a change.
Each and every garment we create is convertible and can be worn in multiple ways.
The sum of one product is infinite and is only bound by creativity.
As with all ventures, when we embarked on Henkaa in 2010, we had no idea how people would respond to our tiny little idea of fashion that changed. Well, women all over the world responded by launching us into the 15th spot of PROFIT Magazine’s HOT 50 ranking of Canada’s Top New Growth Companies. Seemed like we were on to something and so the journey began...
To create convertible apparel and accessories that empower women of all shapes, sizes, and walks of life to do more, create more and save more - one style and one Stylepreneur at a time!
Radically change the way women consume fashion by bringing to life products and services that foster a culture of doing more with less and provide a canvas to express individuality and evolution.
Joanna Duong Chang or simply "Jo", as she is commonly referred, is a daughter, a sister, a girlfriend, a wife, a mom (of two tiny troublemakers), the Founder & CEO of Henkaa and just another woman trying to navigate her way through this little thing called life. Like the rest of us, she’s spent hours in front of her closet never knowing what to wear, how to pack light, how to transition from pregnancy to motherhood, and what the heck to do with her stash of bridesmaid dresses that she paid way too much for but never got to wear again. Then one day, the million dollar question hit her -if everything in life is always changing, why can’t your fashion be flexible enough to change with you?
A company that specializes in multi-functional and convertible fashion and accessories - where the answer to more isn’t more, but less that can do more.
Jo’s family literally came to Canada with nothing more than the shirts on their backs and as the youngest of five, being resourceful, carving an identity, striving for growth and doing more with less are ingrained in her. Henkaa has been a natural fit, shining light on these core values that have also become the foundation of the brand. What started out as a small idea backed by a big dreamer is now the solution for women everywhere to convert and transform fashion to suit their shape, size, season and style. Henkaa truly is a company built by a woman, with a team of (primarily) women, for women - Jo was even honoured as one of Canada’s Top 100 Female Entrepreneurs ranked by PROFIT and Chatelaine (twice!). She’s spoken at the Mompreneurs Conference and will be a Designer of Inspiration at the COCOLILY Social Women’s Entrepreneur event. Henkaa also believes in giving back and supporting women’s causes by participating in the Breast Cancer Run for the Cure, New Circles Prom Drive, Dress for Success, The Shoebox Project, and is an active partner of Plan Canada - Because I am a Girl.
The never ending change in Jo’s journey going from bridesmaid to bride to traveller to preggo to Mompreneur has been the story that evolved Henkaa to where Henkaa is today. And regardless of what changes, one thing will be constant, Henkaa in Jo’s closet!
