At Henkaa, we believe in supporting and connecting with our local community.  Whether it’s using a local manufacturer or opening our showroom as a share space for community vendors, we are confident that a successful business is one that builds growth amongst each other.

How do we maintain strong relationships? Fun and interactive styled shoots!

Styled shoots are a great way to promote Henkaa as it is a visual representation and storyboard with our garments and accessories.  It’s also the perfect way to connect with various vendors as a collaborative initiative which can lead to a greater client base! Plus, there’s the added bonus of having your work featured by movers and shakers in the media ;)

We’ve been fortunate enough to take part in some pretty amazing shoots over the years and hope that the following tips will encourage and help you plan and participate in your own!

Getting started:

  • Spearheading your own styled shoot calls for dedicated planning and can sometimes be a lot of work.  Make sure that you are ready and 100% confirmed to make it happen before reaching out to vendors.  Start by putting together a moodboard of inspiration/ideas for the shoot. It’s always helpful for vendors to see what you have in mind so that they can plan and pitch how to best utilize their expertise.   http://www.gomoodboard.com is a great place to start!
  • Consider vendors of various backgrounds for styling needs (venue, photographer, florist, decorator, planner), and put together the theme and targeted outcome. Planning about two months in advance is the usual standard. It also helps to have a couple of dates in mind so you can be a bit flexible on availability.
  • If you’re joining in on a shoot, don’t be afraid to voice your opinion on what you dress styles will look best on the models in which setting.  After all, you’re the Henkaa expert and more often than not, the organizer will appreciate your input.

Finding vendors:

  • After you’ve decided on the theme and compiled a list of the vendor types you’re looking for, start reaching out.  The wedding vendors that you’ve been getting inspiration from on Instagram? Direct message them! Social media is your best friend in connecting you to the local community.  There are many Facebook groups that that vendors use as a community forum to search for collaborators - it’s also nice to build bridges and get connected.

Shoot day:

  • A week prior to the shoot, re-connect and confirm with all the participating vendors. Be ready with snacks and water.  Have your shot list ready and prepare to lead the vendors in the direction you’re looking for.  But also be flexible and allow them to take photos of their own to add to their portfolio - after all, they’re dedicating their time and products to make this shoot happen. Be supportive and a good sport. Create a great impression of you and your quality of work.  Vendors always remember who was difficult to work with and who was amazing!  Lastly, the last two months of planning lead up to this day and as daunting as that may sound, have fun and make the most of it!

The After:

  • Patience is virtue.  Photos can take a few weeks to render and edit, so try not to bother your photographer for them.  Trust us, they want the finished photos as much as you do! Don’t forget to thank your vendors and be sure to give everyone credit when submitting or pitching the photos.  Also, keep in mind that there are some amazing results and wide-circulation and some that just don’t work out - but at least you’ll have beautiful assets that will help elevate your brand!

We hope this post gets your creative juices flowing and encourages you to get in touch with your local vendors join in on a Styled Shoot, or organize your own!

Oh and we know what you’re thinking...what styles work best during these shoots?
Have no fear, we’ll share our styling tips in the next post so stay tuned!
